Fujairah International Airport
Fujairah, located on the Gulf of Oman, is the hub logistics site in the NAVCENT AOR for air cargo coming from Japan and other points in the Pacific theater via Diego Garcia. Cargo unloaded at Al Fujairah, on the Gulf of Oman, can be subsequently transported via highway to destinations on the Arabian Gulf and hence bypass the need for transit through the Strait of Hormuz. Limited, expensive berthing is available for transient personnel.
Fujairah Aerial Port of Debarkation (APOD), located within confines of the Fujairah International AP, handles Air Force and Navy cargo aircraft. Generally 3 Pacific and 2 Atlantic channel missions transit through Fujairah on a weekly basis. It also supports JTF SWA intra-theater missions (C-130s). Personnel of the UAE Det OIC; 4 enlisted, 4 contract workers, 2 ADP contract workers and 2 drivers. To minimize passenger movement at Fujairah, incoming PAX are normally flown to the receiving commands as quickly as possible. Parts arriving in-theater at Fujairah IAP are trans-shipped via C-130 to Bahrain IAP unless destination ship is outside Arabia Gulf. The OIC in Fujairah reports to the CLFNC Air Terminal Officer. He operates the Fujairah FLSS with personnel support from CLFNC and ASU Bahrain.
From late October 2001 to early March 2002, 36 personnel from US Navy Cargo Handling and Port Group (NAVCHAPGRU) deployed to Bahrain and Fujairah in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Working hand in hand with the US Air Force, NAVCHAPGRU handled more than 25,000 tons of mission-essential CASREPS, other repair parts and miscellaneous cargo for delivery to 65 afloat units in the Arabian Gulf and thousands of troops on the ground in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
Fujairah International Airport is considered to be one of the most important pilllars of commercial activity in the Emirate. It is a major line of communication connecting Fujairah with the outside world. The airport started to function in 1987. It is supervised over by the Department of Civil Aviation. It is the fifth airport in the U.A.E. and the only one on the East Coast. This together with the seaport, creates a vital position for the re-export trade between the states of East Asia and Europe, as it is near to both, in addition to the similarity of both security and customs procedures to those of these countries. This is especially advantageous to the employees of both air and sea ports in their import and export dealings to and from the state.
The airport also renders different modern technical and record services to all types of planes.
